Teenagers spend an average of 31 hours a week online and nearly two hours a week looking at pornography, according to a study.

ok.  so 2 hours per week.  that’s 520 hours over a 5 year period–almost 22 days (without sleeping).  while i have my doubts as to the rigor applied in this study, i would not be surprised to learn that “nearly two hours a week” is conservative.

parents, don’t be naive.

  1. Dangerous ground for sure for teens. Seeing barely clad humans is unfortunately going to happen unless you lock yourself in your house without a TV, magazine, or computer. I have been talking to my boys about how to “bounce their eyes” when they come across something like that. I also heard a good piece of advice from Dan Hawkins, head football coach for Colorado. He recommends keeping your home computer out in the middle of a very high traffic area of the home. Agreed. We will not be allowing individual computers nor TV’s in children’s bedrooms. Thanks for reminding us.

those are good tips for sure. and, i don’t think (i think frt will agree) the real issue is “seeing” barely/non-clad humans. it’s the false promise the world brings with the images that somehow an ultimately fulfilling experience will result. sorry for the yoda-speak, but i think the point comes across.

kudos to no computers/tv’s in kids’ bedrooms. good job!

  2. Good info Teason. I think you’re right that it is conservative. And, by the way, I should get you on some kind of feed so I know when you post.

Unfortunately, it’s not just teenagers. I have a friend who pulled up the history on her browser after her nine-year-old son had been on the computer. She found FOUR porn sites.

    Nine-years-old…

I too think the 2 hours a week stat might be on the conservative side, especially considering how much time facebook and blogs can suck out of me. I could easily spend two hours a day (let alone a week) on those sites, not realizing at the time just how long I’ve been sitting at my computer. Seems very likely it would be the same for someone who frequents porn sites.
